December 1, 2007 - continued:
After browsing through the markets briefly, we continued on through the nearby graveyard - which as morbid as that sounds it is actually quite a beautiful place. Most of the graves are tended and have pretty flowers or low hedges around them as well as a decorative cross or angel at the head. Once through the graveyard we headed straight for a restaurant called Stiftskeller St Peter, the oldest restaurant in Salzburg which has been in existence since 803 AD. By the time we arrived at the restaurant (which can cater for up to 350 people) it was full - or it seemed, but they were squeezing more and more people in. The restaurant specializes in local cuisine, however today we were only interested in sampling the famous Salzburger Nockerl. Salzburger Nockerl is a delightful and huge egg dessert which takes around a half hour to prepare. It cannot be prepared in advance and has to been eaten straight from the oven. We ordered our coffees and awaited the famous and delectable dessert. We were not disappointed and we did not leave hungry either - we ordered two of these (between four of us) but actually one would have been plenty.
After an hour or so, we rolled out of the restaurant and continued on to explore more of the old town before crossing the Salzach River and walking to the gardens of Mirabell Palace. There's a nice view looking back from across the Salzach River towards the old town with the towers of the cathedral, and the fortress which sits high up on the hill behind.
The gardens of Schloss Mirabell are usually planted in colourful flowers in decoratively designed flower beds bordered by hedges and looked over by the Pegasus, unicorns, and lions. However given it was winter, the gardens were void of the colourful blooms. Back on the main road, more small christmas markets had sprung up near the palace although the best one in Salzburg was definitely at the Cathedral in the old town.
With time marching on (as usual) it was time to hit the road again and return to Freising. The journey takes around 2 hours but that's without stopping for dinner, which we definitely needed to do. We had dinner back at the Chiemsee before driving straight through to Freising.
