May 30, 2007:
Although we'd originally planned to spend just 3 nights at Killarney Provincial Park, it was such a wonderful place - peaceful, and naturally beautiful with wildlife to boot, we decided it warranted another 2 nights. Unfortunately, when we tried to book an extra couple of nights, our site was reserved so we had no choice but to pull up the anchors and keep on rolling.
We drove to the very end of the road and checked out the town site of Killarney, which sits on the shores of Georgian Bay, just as the rain started to pour down then watched as a section of wharf drifted by on the flood waters.
It was time to make tracks, so we turned the wheels towards the Trans-Canada Highway 70 kms away and under a constantly leaky grey cloud which was hovering above us we decided to just make a beeline towards the west to see where we'd end up. Besides gassing up we only made one deviation en-route and that was to check out the Chutes Provincial Park but with the rain coming down harder than ever, we decided it wasn't worth it for us so continued on.
We pulled off the Trans-Canada Highway just before Sault Ste Marie and headed south to Hilton Beach on St Joseph Island. We found the Busy Beaver campground and set up along the water front of a small bay looking out to the North Channel of Lake Huron. It was a very pretty spot which would've been even nicer if it wasn't raining so darn hard. It was still an enjoyable spot and we are forever in awe of the beauty surrounding the Great Lakes of Ontario.
