June 19, 2007:
After yet another scrumptious breakfast at Tuckamore Lodge and catching up with last minute emails, we hit the road for St Barbe on the west coast of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. We stopped in at Plum Point for gas and a few supplies before continuing on to the Ferry Terminal. After checking in, we waited for the ferry 'Apollo' to arrive with its cargo of passengers from Labrador and soon afterwards we were herded onboard for the one and a half hour journey back.
The ferry terminal at the other end is actually situated in the province of Quebec in a town called Blanc Sablon which is only a few kilometres from the border of Labrador. After driving off the ferry at 5:00pm in Blanc Sablon, we headed straight for the Information Centre in L'Anse au Clair, but unfortunately it was closed by the time we arrived, so we moved on to visit the Point Amour Lighthouse. Although the various buildings on the premises were closed the gate was open, so we walked through and enjoyed the scene and view from the cliff edge. The Point Amour Lighthouse was constructed between 1854 and 1857 and stands at 109 feet high making it the tallest in Atlantic Canada and the second tallest in Canada. On our way back to the truck and camper we spotted a marmot (locally known as Groundhogs or Whistlers) foraging amongst the foundation rubble of an old building. The cute fella was relatively comfortable with our presence and posed for some photos with a backdrop of the Strait of Belle Isle.
We moseyed on along the Labrador Coastal Drive (Highway 510), travelling through various coastal towns until we reached Pinware. The town is situated near the mouth of the Pinware River where there is a Provincial Park. This was to be our spot for the night - we parked and setup 'camp' in the overflow camping area near the end of the spit. There was a large and interestingly shaped iceberg sitting out in the bay with a little hole through the side, however it soon disappeared behind a shroud of mist.
Tonight we sleep with icebergs!
