Setting out from Otematata, we head in the general direction of Mt Cook passing by Lake Benmore and several canals and other lakes which are connected to the hydro scheme of this region - an important one for New Zealand.
We are on a mission to get to the top of the South Island today, since tomorrow we are scheduled to catch a ferry to the North Island, in the morning. We plan to cover this region again once we return from the North Island, so only stopped briefly at Lake Tekapo to capture the lake since it was beautifully fringed by colourful lupins and backdropped by the snowcapped Southern Alps.
Taking the Inland Scenic Route, we dashed through the Canterbury Plains admiring its neatly laid out paddocks of green grass, fruit and vegetables. We met up with Highway 1 just north of Christchurch and carried on through to Kaikoura and onto Blenheim.
We stopped briefly between Tua Marina and Rarangi to watch a beautiful sunset unwind before carrying on to Rarangi to camp the night at the beach with the sound of the ocean waves.
The South Island is generally not a destination to be rushed through during a visit but as mentioned before, we had to get to within a 30 minute range of the ferry terminal in order to make an early morning sailing the next day.
