We departed from our pristine and natural campsite on the southern shores of Lake Wakatipu and made tracks towards Te Anau and beyond. Passing by the beautiful green pastures with the usual abundance of grazing sheep, we suddenly caught sight of a plume of smoke coming from a stack of some sort. Following the plume, it lead us to the Fairlight Train Station where we saw the historic Kingston Flyer being hooked up to its carriages for a return journey to Kingston. The Kingston Flyer is a beautifully restored steam train which was built in 1925 and now operates on rides between the towns of Fairlight and Kingston.
After watching the graceful old steam train pull out of the station, the surrounding valley echoing the sound of the working engine, we set off again towards Te Anau for an $8 each shower at the local campground - crazy pricing!! We wanted to get into Milford Sound that night so we set off from Te Anau as soon as possible
As we entered the Eglinton River Valley, it was like a carpet of vibrant colour was being unrolled before us. Lupins grew in fields on either side of the river in blue, purple, pink, white and yellow. Willow trees dotted the colourful landscape as the spikes of lupin flowers waved gracefully like a Mexican wave, in the gusting wind.
