May 27, 2008:
Before leaving the lower Georgian Bay region, we shot across to check out the Big Chute Marine Railway, a park managed by Parks Canada which is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway - a National Historic Site. Unique to North America, the Big Chute Marine Railway features a carriage which transports leisure boats (with people in them) over a 17.7 metre height of land to give them access to the Lake Simcoe fishery. It is an engineering marvel and visitors to Big Chute can get a close up view of the modern carriage as well as the old carriage which is maintained as a standby. We were not fortunate enough to see it in action this time round - it seems still too early for most vacationers.
On our way back to the camper, we nearly stepped on a snake slithering its way across the pavement - eeekkkk!!! Although Rolf is not at all fond of snakes, he managed to "run off" a few shots before the snake retreated to bushes and we retreated to our camper ... checking for snakes as we went.
We spent the rest of the day driving to Killarney Provincial Park at the northern end of Georgian Bay. The plan, besides enjoying the scenery and nature of the park, was to regroup and re-organise the camper by optimizing the space a little better than last year.
We arrived late in the afternoon and secured a fabulous camp site next to a high, flat rock. It was a great place to sit and watch the sun set each night over George Lake, which was exactly what we did on our first night while capturing the image on film.
