October 03, 2007:
Once we arrived in Sault Ste Marie, we started by checking out the International Bridge which crosses the St Mary's River and provides a link between Ontario, Canada and Michigan, USA. We then moved onto the locks.
Sault Ste Marie, also known as the Soo, is an industrial town and it's locks were once among the main shipping canals for large ships carrying passengers and cargo throughout the Great Lakes. The St Mary's River joins Lake Superior and Lake Huron but along it are a set of rapids which makes it impassable for ships - hence the development of the locks system. The Soo Locks were opened in 1895 and are now a National Historic Site - they were the first locks in the world to be operated by electricity. Use of them discontinued after a lock failure in 1987 and a new lock was built within the old in 1998 for recreational use.
We stayed until after sunset, then headed off towards Pancake Bay Provincial Park still about an hour or so away.
