An early start from Oamaru, allowed enough time to drive to Christchurch (3 hours) then check out just a few of the sights the 'Garden City' has to offer.
The city of Christchurch is one of expansive gardens and avenues of trees. During the month of February each year the city hosts a Festival of Flowers which visitors from around New Zealand and the globe flock to.
Next stop is the quaint seaside village of Sumner and from there a jaunt up to the Summit Road atop the Port Hills. From t he Summit Road you are rewarded with stunning views of the Lyttelton Harbour in one direction, and in the other direction Christchurch city backdropped by the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps. This is not to mention the sandy coastline of New Brighton Beach. The Port Hills are a popular recreational area for both locals and visitors.
Heading back towards Christchurch city, no trip to Lyttelton would be complete without a drive through the Lyttelton Tunnel. The tunnel was officially opened to the public on December 9, 1867 and was the first rail tunnel in New Zealand and for many years the longest. It has since been converted to a motor vehicle tunnel.
