Although we were aiming to be at Nugget Point in the Catlins for sunset we stopped off for an icecream in the town of Milton. The Midway Dairy in Milton prides itself on serving the largest, freshest, and cheapest icecreams in a cone - and we can vouch for this, it was the best icecream ever!!
Moving on, we start along the Catlins Highway portion of the Southern Scenic Route towards Nugget Point Lighthouse and stop off at Roaring Bay to check out the Yellow Eyed Penguins and Sea Lions on the beach from a hide. There was an interesting interaction between the two species. While the Penguin was attempting to come ashore the sea lion would charge at it and chase it back into the sea. Eventually the penguins snuck past the ever alert sea lion, who afterwards looked disgruntled at his failed attempt to prevent the penguin from coming ashore and took to the water for a swim.
We moseyed on to the end of the road in time to catch a beautiful sunset at the Nugget Point Lighthouse with its rugged "nugget-like" rocks scattered out in front.
